Even absolute newcomers will soon be scaling protected Peak District outcrops on this short session. Attendees will become proficient in tying in, safety techniques and multiple methods of ascent, along with rappelling. Painters of all abilities – including beginners – will learn how to plan and create modern art. Part of the schedule will be spent outside, working on structured activities en plein air. These sketches and paintings will then be expanded upon in the studio, with attendees creating a number of interpretive scenes in acrylic paint to be displayed in the local community. The group has sole use of the venue, which is set around an open courtyard and has a sun terrace with views over the countryside. The price includes five days of painting tuition; all meals; and an outing to the nearby fortress and additional local sights.

Ottolenghi-Inspired Cooking in Portugal

This sun-drenched foodie getaway, located at a riverside villa in the inland Algarve, is inspired by the vegetarian dishes of celebrated cooks. Guests will master the art of selection of small dishes, attend a falafel-making workshop, perfect brunch dishes such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains like a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. There are trips to the village market and a local vineyard to sample Portuguese wines, plus free time for strolls by the nearby river, to relax on the deck or take a dip in the pool. The accommodation, a renovated rural property, has multiple rooms, plus safari tents in the grounds.

Hip Hop in Buckinghamshire

Hip Hop Don’t Stop is an uplifting, inclusive weekend dance intensive for adults in High Wycombe. The format throughout the camp is a high-energy warm-up session, followed by several 90-minute classes teaching various street dance styles, then an hour-long jam to show off those solos. Participants are divided into levels based on skill level, so it is perfect for those who are completely new to popping and locking, all the way to advanced dancers or teachers. This event does not provide lodging but there are a number of places to stay within walking distance, and it is under an hour by rail into central London.

Maritime Singing Break in Cornwall

This coastal town is the perfect setting for a maritime music retreat. Participants will learn historic sailing songs from a experienced musician, and have a go at composing original ones. The schedule includes vocal warmups, breath control techniques, stagecraft advice and a final evening concert. The retreat is based at a country house overlooking St Ives Bay. Full board are included, such as a Cornish cream tea on arrival, cooked or continental breakfasts, packed lunches and three-course dinners. Grog, unfortunately, is not included. Writing in Crete

Author and lecturer an experienced instructor runs the daily workshops on this authors' getaway. He covers everything from plot, characters, locations and suspense, to submitting work to publishers. A co-host, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in special sessions at the beginning and end of the week. The holiday is held at a traditional complex in Vamos at the foot of the White mountains – ten one- and two-bedroom cottages surround a garden and pool (non-writing partners are welcome to come along). A leading eco-centre near Machynlleth runs a host of programs covering eco-living: from wildlife gardening to upcycling. It is aimed at produce “ecologically mindful beekeepers”.
