An Account of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Floor

Back in 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was I would book accommodation after getting there, yet once I got there, a large conference was in town and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open all night. Not knowing quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I boarded public transport and began walking near the casino, thinking I could pass the night in a place that stayed open through the night. This was not ideal in the best shape for acing the admissions interview the next day, but as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more folks who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed out of place because a woman noticed me loitering in downtown and wondered if I was OK. I explained my situation and right away she said I was welcome to sleep on the ground in her student dorm at ANU – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where the important interview was the following day. She even offered me some free dinner: one of the sandwiches she brought back her part-time job. This gave me warm shower facilities and a protected spot to rest to sleep.

With hindsight, I can appreciate the significant risk she undertook as a young woman letting a guy who was a complete stranger crash at her place. In those days I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I am astonished she took that chance – yet very grateful.

Ultimately, I did not attending the Australian National University, and I never saw her again, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of kindness. It is my wish life has returned her act of kindness tenfold. The world needs more individuals like that woman.
