At least 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Police Raid on Criminal Groups
At least 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's past.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of AlemĂŁo and Penha, state officials said. More than 80 people were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations broke out when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization reacted using armed resistance, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The slum neighborhoods near the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of a major organised crime groups.
State officials said no less than 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Dozens of people were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Resident Accounts
Locals have compared the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the operation began.
Roads remain closed throughout the region.
Gang Growth
The Red Command group has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.
Security forces stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were seized in the operation, along with dozens of firearms.
Raid Preparation
The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.
Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be members of a faction from the Pará state who are presently concealed in the city.

Large-scale police operations are not uncommon in the country prior to significant global gatherings in the country.
