Chelsea's Boss Maresca Labels Lead-Up Time as His 'Worst 48 Hours' at the Blues

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca remarked that the run-up to Saturday's triumph against Everton represented "the most challenging 48 hours" he has experienced with the London club.

The Italian made a rather mysterious message in his after-game interview despite notching a 2-0 win at home thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those three precious points sent Chelsea once again into the Premier League's top four, potentially lightening the atmosphere after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the team's drought without a win to four outings.

Yet, when questioned about the full-back's contribution and general display, Maresca unexpectedly disclosed his displeasure over the previous two days at the organization.

"How the squad want to learn has been fantastic and this is the explanation why I praise them - because with a host of challenges, they are doing very well after a complicated week," he stated.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the most difficult because a lot of people didn't support us."

When pushed further on the specifics, the former Leicester City boss continued: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When asked if he was referring to people within at Chelsea, he responded: "In general. Overall," before specifying when asked if it was aimed at supporters or the press: "I adore the fans and we are extremely happy with the fans."

Injury and Suspension Woes

Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension problems, noting they had been without key forward Cole Palmer for much of the campaign, in addition to losing key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to two serious injuries.

"I really commend the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them minus Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are doing brilliantly. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer available, we said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season without our top player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would like people outside to acknowledge because the work from the players is fantastic."

Chelsea's success over Everton cemented their position in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle scheduled next week.

Uncertainty Over Maresca's Remark

It was unclear who or what caused Maresca to describe the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his tenure as Chelsea head coach.

In that period, the coach had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at the training ground, faced a pre-game press briefing where he appeared at ease, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton side.

It was unclear whether any specific press stories had unsettled him, if online comments played a role, or if it was something more significant from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an issue involving the club's fans, a section of which have not yet fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
