Contaminated Seafood Issue: The Nation Confronts Pollution in Key Manufacturing Area

An extensive manufacturing zone situated in the suburbs of the capital is addressing radioactive pollution following an official taskforce found presence of the hazardous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two manufacturing plants inside the area, that encompasses businesses shipping frozen seafood.

Emergency Response and Product Withdrawal

The finding has led to immediate decontamination efforts and the moving of local residents, following a comparable contamination scare in the US that was traced back to the Indonesian plants.

An important international retailer is one of the businesses that have withdrawn items from its shelves following the finding.

Probe and Detection of Contamination

The country's authorities launched an inquiry when the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a consignment of frozen coated shrimp exported by an Indonesian company.

The FDA issued an warning instructing suppliers and retailers to dispose of the product and avoid selling it, even though the detected amount was far below the agency's action limit. They noted that the amount of Caesium-137 they had found would not present an immediate hazard to consumers.

The FDA explained: “The main impact on health of concern following longer term, ongoing small amount contact (eg through eating of polluted products or liquid over a period) is an increased risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Pollution and Medical Examinations

Radiation scans showed at least 22 plants in the industrial zone were contaminated. The official taskforce did not identify the 21 additional manufacturing sites, but said they would immediately undergo decontamination procedures carried out by Indonesia's atomic energy agency.

A senior official stated that people residing in strongly contaminated zones would be moved until the location was decontaminated, adding that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.

Medical officials also conducted checks on nearby workers and people living close to the industrial zone, finding nine individuals who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being allowed to go back.

Decontamination and Isolation Measures

The contaminated locations will right away undergo cleanup operations by the national atomic energy agency. Officials have further selected the area of a recycled metal factory as an containment facility for polluted goods.

Indonesia, which operates no atomic power plants or arms program, suspects that Caesium-137 may have entered the nation from abroad.

Origin of Pollution and Trade Limits

A taskforce representative informed reporters that recycled metal shipments were the likely cause of contamination and confirmed the government would immediately impose restrictions on metal waste imports. He said that transport were also being inspected for possible exposure as they moved through the area.

About Caesium-137 and Public Risks

Caesium-137 is a dangerous nuclear isotope that typically enters the environment as a consequence of nuclear testing or incidents, like the Fukushima disaster or Chernobyl. Small amounts are found in soil, products and air.

The level detected in the frozen shrimp was much less than FDA action limits, but the authority explained long-term exposure to even small amounts of the element was associated to an higher chance of the disease.

Recall Information

The recalled shrimp was sold at large retail outlets across at least a dozen US states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
