A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen people got wounded in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews went into the house close to the Verona region to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled following the incident was located soon after. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene showed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the residence was under an eviction order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the siblings triggered the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander the police commander informed news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

He believed the blast had happened on a floor above the doorway and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he said members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed reporters, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the line of duty.
