A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen people got wounded in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The blast took place as officers and emergency crews went into the house close to the Verona region to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled following the incident was located soon after. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene showed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, explained the residence was under an eviction order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

He believed the blast had happened on a floor above the doorway and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he said members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.
