Putin Pledges Steady Oil Supplies to India in Rebuff of US Demands
Amid a clear statement to Western nations, President Vladimir Putin has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to guarantee “continuous” shipments of energy resources to India. This declaration came as the two leaders met in New Delhi and declared their partnership were “immune to outside influence.”
A Signal Directed at the West
Putin's comments, issued after the annual summit, appeared to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, which have repeatedly attempted to urge New Delhi into scaling back its longstanding ties with Moscow. The context is in response to earlier American measures, including the introduction of tariffs against Indian goods because of its buying of Moscow's energy exports.
“Moscow remains a dependable source of energy resources and all required for the development of India’s economy,” he remarked. “We are ready to persist in guaranteeing the uninterrupted supply of fuel for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”
The Indian leader, though he did not naming energy specifically, supported the focus by saying that “secure fuel supplies has been a strong and important cornerstone of the India-Russia partnership.”
Defying US Interference
In the lead-up to the summit, during a media interview, Putin had challenged American pressure regarding India's oil imports. He argued, “Should America is entitled to buy our atomic materials, then why can't India enjoy the same privilege?”
Putin's arrival was his maiden journey to India following the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi made a clear show to display that the personal rapport between the heads of state persisted strongly.
A Personal Greeting
In a notable gesture, Prime Minister Modi welcomed directly Putin right off the plane. They exchanged a hearty embrace as close allies before enjoying a one-on-one meal on Thursday evening.
Modi referred to India's relationship with Russia as “a guiding star” and noted it was “built on mutual respect and profound confidence.”
Expanding Strategic Cooperation
The bilateral summit yielded several important deals regarding defence and economic cooperation. A major outcome was the signing of an strategic roadmap extending until 2030, which targets to double bilateral trade to $100bn annually by the 2030 deadline.
Additionally vowed to restructure their military partnership. Even as Russia is still India's largest source of weapons, its share has diminished over the past decade as India has sought broaden its sources.
Their communique highlighted an agreement on the collaborative manufacturing of cutting-edge weapons platforms, although direct mention of purchases such as the fifth-generation aircraft were left out.
In conclusion, Russia and India reiterated that amid the “current complex, difficult, and unpredictable geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian ties remain strong to outside forces.”
