Scream OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.
"Returning to a character you portrayed in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that kept me up at night," the actor reveals.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Favorites
Reports have confirmed that three different characters from earlier films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Fans should get ready for the return of the endearing and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a small cameo is a dream come true, though he is terrified about the audience response. The actor vividly recalls the exact moment he received the offer from the series creator.
"I remember the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the decades since the 1996 movie was released, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."
The Fear of Letting Down the Fans
Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling significant pressure about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Theories and Anticipation Run High
While many longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a bizarre communal situation. The possibility of a self-referential story, reminiscent of earlier genre films, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
