The Tragic Change a Single Year Has Caused in America

Twelve months back, the situation was utterly distinct. Before the American presidential vote, reflective citizens could recognize the nation's significant faults – its injustices and imbalance – however they still could perceive it as the US. A free society. A country where legal governance held significance. A nation guided by a respectable and decent leader, notwithstanding his advanced age and growing weakness.

Nowadays, this autumn, numerous citizens scarcely know the land we live in. Individuals suspected of being unauthorized foreigners are rounded up and shoved into transport, sometimes refused legal rights. The left side of the White House – is undergoing demolition for an obscene dance hall. Donald Trump is targeting his political rivals or supposed enemies and requesting federal prosecutors surrender a huge total of public funds. Soldiers with weapons are deployed to US urban areas with deceptive justifications. The military command, relabeled the Department of War, has effectively freed itself of regular press examination while it uses possibly reaching nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Universities, law firms, media outlets are submitting from leader's menaces, and wealthy elites are treated like aristocracy.

“The US, shortly prior to its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has crossed the edge toward dictatorship and fascism,” Garrett Graff, commented in August. “Finally, more quickly than I believed likely, it did happen in America.”

Each day begins amid recent atrocities. And it's hard to comprehend – and distressing to accept – how severely declined our nation is, and the speed at which it has happened.

Nevertheless, we understand that the leader was properly voted in. Even after his deeply disturbing previous administration and even after the alerts that came with the understanding of the rightwing blueprint – following the president personally declared plainly he intended to be a dictator just on day one – enough Americans chose him instead of the other candidate.

While alarming as today's circumstances are, it's more daunting to recognize that we are just three-quarters of a year into this administration. How will an additional three years of this decline find us? And what if that period becomes a more extended duration, since there is no one to restrain this ruler from determining that another term is necessary, maybe for security concerns?

Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. There will be midterm elections in 2026 that could bring a different balance of power, should Democrats recapture either chamber of Congress. There are elected officials who are striving to exert certain responsibility, such as representatives currently initiating an inquiry regarding the effort to money grab from the justice department.

And a national vote in the next cycle could begin us down the road to healing precisely as the previous vote put us on this disappointing trajectory.

There are numerous residents protesting in the streets across municipalities, as they did in the past days during anti-authority protests.

An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of the US is awakening”, exactly as before following the Red Scare during the fifties or throughout the Vietnam war protests or during the Nixon controversy.

During those times, the tilting vessel eventually was righted.

He claims he understands the signs of that resurgence and observes it occurring at present. As support, he cites the large-scale demonstrations, the broad, multi-faction opposition to a broadcaster's firing and the largely united defiance by media to agree to government requirements they solely cover approved content.

“The sleeping giant perpetually exists dormant before certain corruption turns extremely harmful, a particular deed so offensive toward public welfare, some brutality so disruptive, that the giant is compelled other than to stir.”

It's a positive outlook, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll be validated.

Meanwhile, the major inquiries remain: is the US able to ever recover? Can it retrieve its position globally and its adherence to constitutional order?

Or must we acknowledge that the national endeavor succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My negative thoughts suggests that the final scenario is true; that all may indeed be gone. My hopeful heart, however, convinces me that we have to attempt, by any means we can.

In my case, as a media critic, that’s about urging journalists to live up, more fully, to their purpose of overseeing leadership. For others, it may be engaging with election efforts, or planning demonstrations, or developing approaches to safeguard voting rights.

Under twelve months back, we were in a very different place. A year from now? Or after another term? The truth is, we don’t know. Our sole course is try to persevere.
