UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned church.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."

The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
